If you're avoiding coffee because of caffeine or other health issues, you you'll love Hot Brewed Cacao -- a great alternative for those trying to break the coffee habit or who simply want a healthy hot beverage option. Learn how to roast cacao nibs yourself for this antioxidant-rich drink!

Whether you’re trying to avoid coffee because of the caffeine or other health issues, you may find yourself in search of a hot beverage that gives you the same feeling as coffee — but without the side effects.

Hot Brewed Cacao is a great alternative for those trying to break the coffee habit or who simply want a healthy hot beverage option.

Have you ever heard of brewed cacao?

It’s made in a French Press and tastes somewhat like chocolate, but truly has a distinct flavor of it’s own.

How To Roast Cacao Nibs

In the beginning, I purchased cacao nibs marketed as coffee alternatives, but recently discovered that I could roast Wildly Organic’s Cacao Nibs myself.

If you roast the nibs ahead of time, you’ll be able to make this drink in just a few minutes. Here’s how to roast cacao nibs:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and spread cacao nibs in a single layer on a baking tray.
  2. Roast for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Once roasted, remove the nibs from the oven and allow to cool completely.
  4. Pulse roasted cacao nibs in a coffee or spice grinder. It’s important to pulse and not grind continuously to get the right texture. They should look much like coffee grounds.

The flavor of this brewed cacao beverage greatly depends on roasting the cacao nibs. I suggest roasting more than is needed for this recipe so you have extra available for other uses.

Roasted cacao nibs are great for topping ice cream, smoothies, oatmeal, and granola.

Hot Brewed Cacao

Drink hot brewed cacao straight, kind of like black coffee, if you like. Add your favorite whole sweetener and creamer, if you prefer. This White Chocolate Coffee Creamer would be a lovely addition! If you’re sugar-free, use stevia or Wildly Organic’s Coco Monkey.

If you are trying to cut coffee consumption, try mixing a small amount of brewed cacao with your regular coffee, gradually reducing the amount of coffee you drink and increasing the amount of brewed cacao each day.

Have you ever roasted cacao nibs or had hot brewed cacao?

Recipe Notes

When brewing cacao, it may take some time to find the perfect ratio of water to cacao nibs that suits your taste. I use 4 tablespoons of roasted cacao nibs in an 8-cup French press. Feel free to experiment with the water/cacao ratio.
