When you play hard, you get thirsty. That’s your body’s way of telling you, “Hey! I need some rehydration here!”
Most of the time, we reach for water. Of course, water is necessary, but what about the times you want more?
Please don’t reach for the sugar-laden, artificially flavored electrolyte drinks — try this hydrating Hibiscus Cooler instead!
Herbal Hydrating Hibiscus Cooler
It may look like a bit that sugary red drink from your childhood, but it’s totally natural and good for you!
Dandelion root is great for helping to support the liver function, and hibiscus flowers are often used for helping to maintain fluid balance in the body.¹ Both are good for assisting with edema, which can occur often in the summer. Lemon provides a nice tang to balance out sweetness and help to quench the thirst.
Now, let’s talk sweeteners… If you’re looking for a super sweet and fruity drink, you won’t find that here.
This Hibiscus Cooler is rather bitter on it’s own. If you like bitter tea, then drink this plain.
If it’s sweetness you’re seeking, skip the white sugar and go for a whole sweetener to balance out the bitter dandelion and tart lemon.
Honey, WFN’s Coconut Syrup, maple syrup and even molasses are all great liquid sweeteners. They will provide a bit more caramelly flavor to this beverage. They have a higher sugar content, so keep that in mind if you are wanting to reduce your sugar intake.
Make this drink in large batches and keep it in the fridge for all-day sipping. It’s nice to have when kids come in from playing in the heat and want something cold right away!
