Goji berries may not be something you’re familiar with, but you need to get to know them!

What Are Goji Berries?

Goji berries are also known as wolfberries. They are the fruit of either one of two closely related species of boxthorn in the nightshade family.  Nightshades include tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and chili peppers. People with nightshade sensitivities should avoid goji berries. 

The majority of gojis are cultivated in north central China. Farmers in the United States and Canada also grow goji berries.

Why Are Goji Berries Healthy?

They’re a tasty and versatile way to boost your nutrition because they’re chock-full of antioxidants.

Gojis are considered one of the best food sources of the carotenoid zeaxanthin, one of two carotenoids along with lutein, contained within the retina. Studies indicate that zeaxanthin may help reduce the risk of macular degeneration (source).

Therefore, including goji berries in your diet may protect your vision as you age! If “getting older” is still a way off, it’s never too early to start taking care of your eyes.

But… Goji Berry-Ginger Tea?

Yes, you sure can! Traditionally, Chinese, Mongolian, and Tibetan cultures brewed tea with goji berries. Goji Berry-Ginger Tea is so simple to make it’s hardly a recipe!

My first sip of plain goji berry tea reminded me a bit of an herbal dandelion coffee substitute I’ve had. It was delicious! Because ginger also has amazing benefits for healthy living, I added it to my blend.

Add your favorite natural sweetener to taste, but honestly, it’s lovely without!

The berries will plump up and soften as they steep. Eat them as you sip or save them to add to a smoothie later.

If You Take Certain Pharmaceutical Drugs…

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses gojis to treat conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. However, when it comes to pharmaceutical drugs to treat those conditions, in vitro studies have shown a possible interference with warfarin and drugs for hypertension and diabetes (source). If you take these medications, be sure to consult your health care practitioner concerning using goji berries.

Instructions
  1. Place the dried goji berries and ginger, if using, in the bottom of a mug or tea cup
  2. Pour boiling water into the cup
  3. Steep several minutes until the water cools and looks like a weak tea
  4. Sweeten, if desired, then sip and enjoy
