Have you ever struggled with dry hair or a dry, flaky and itchy scalp?

While the problem can be persistent, you don’t need to doom yourself to a life of unfashionable hats. You can’t go on forever trying to cover up the snow-capped mountain forming on your head. 😉
There is good news! This rather unsightly, irritating, and embarrassing problem is very much seasonal and can be managed.
And yes, you can experience this frustrating phenomenon without having “clinical” dandruff. Dandruff is actually caused by a yeast-like fungus that feeds on excess sebum. Its telltale sign is the crusty yellow shedding of the skin. Hence, the thin white skin shedding of a dry scalp may not necessarily mean you have dandruff.
What Causes Dry & Itchy Scalp?
Things that may exacerbate the itchy and flaking symptoms may include:
- a change in season (hello, Winter!)
- over-washing your hair
- the type of shampoo or other hair treatments you use
- extensive use of harsh chemicals (from coloring and washing)
- chlorinated water
- washing your hair with hot water
- environmental pollutants
- a change in diet
Minimizing exposure to commercial products goes a long way in helping your scalp to rebalance its pH which retains a healthy level of natural oil. Many commercial products can either strip your hair of its natural oils or build up on the scalp — both manifesting in dry and irritated skin.
In reading some of the labels of hair conditioning bottles, you’ll be left gobsmacked. Commonly used ingredients, such as sodium lauryl sulfate and momoethenolamine may actually contribute to skin rashes and dry skin.
One thing I have found helpful over the years as I’ve experienced the woes of seasonal dry scalp and brittle hair, is to undergo a deep conditioning hair treatment every few weeks, or as the symptoms crop up.
The Awesome Trio For A Deep Hair Conditioning Treatment
My favorite ingredients to use are all-natural and free from the harsh chemicals found in many conventional hair treatments.
It actually doesn’t get any simpler than this — just coconut oil, almond oil and tea tree essential oil!
Coconut oil is a wonderful conditioning oil and has been used by traditional cultures all over the world for this exact reason. When I was traveling in India, I noticed local coconut oil for sale in nearly every supermarket and convenience store. It’s a product the local people have been producing and using long before it became trendy. Many of the women attributed their luscious long locks to the use of coconut oil in their hair. Note taken.
Almond oil is naturally high in Vitamin E — an essential vitamin for maintaining hair and skin health. Tea tree essential oil may help relieve skin irritations due to its natural anti-fungal properties. Combine these 3 together, and you have a wonderful hair conditioning treatment.
